ACL recap

I'm very glad we went to the Austin City Limits festival this year.

I'll admit that I was surprised I was able to convince the Magical White Guy to attend with me, since he isn't really big on crowds. And, well... ACL is basically just a giant crowd with some stages set up along the outskirts. (This picture does not do it justice, but you'll have to trust me. Just imagine people as far as the eye can see.)

Day one was absolutely gorgeous. The weather was perfect, the music was great, and the 2.5 million dollars worth of grass was amazing. It was seriously like dark green carpet or grass at a high dollar golf course. Pay close attention to this picture so that you can compare it with the last one. I was very happy with all the day one bands we saw: Avett Brothers, Dr. Dog, Raphael Saadiq (who might have been my favorite show), John Legend and Kings of Leon. I'll tell you about the taxi debacle some other time.

Day 2 started great - it was overcast, but not too bad. We saw the Sam Roberts band, and then........... it started to rain. Not sprinkle. RAIN. We toughed it out for the end of Grizzly Bear and Citizen Cope, but then decided to call it a day. I was okay with missing the Dave Matthews Band since I had gotten to see them up close and personal at the ACL taping. Instead, we went to a bar and had some dinner and drinks.

We had to psyche ourselves up to go on day 3. It was still pretty nasty outside, and the ground was already pretty muddy when we left on Saturday night. But, we decided to tough it out since there were quite a few bands I wanted to see. When we got there, it looked like a totally different place. Remember the picture of Larry lying on the grass on day one? Well, he wouldn't lie down, but this is what the exact same spot looked like:

Not only was it sloppy and gloopy mud, it was smelly. Apparently it was something called "Dillo Dirt," which is a combination of composted yard clippings and treated sewage. ew. However, it was still fun. We had to be really careful walking so that we wouldn't slip and fall, which made Larry's already bad back even worse. As a result, we only stayed for the Deadweather, Ben Harper and some of Michael Franti. Then we had to go. I wanted to stay for Pearl Jam, but since we "saw" Eddie Vedder with Kings of Leon, I was okay to go leave and go get cleaned up.

As a recap.... here was day one:
And here was day three:
Wristbands for next year go on sale Tuesday morning. We'll be buying ours, hope to see you there!

What???? What color are you wearing? I wish you were wearing a red and white striped shirt with funny black glasses, it would make you a whole lot easier to find.

I'm wearing black with a shoulder back that's pink across the front - Angie is wearing white and Colin's back is to the camera wearing a black shirt and sitting in a red chair.

Right side middle :-)
